Little Thing – BIG Impact
When our Family Services receive a call for assistance, listening is the most important gift we can give. The call Katrina Basso received at the end of April had a note of inner despair she could not ignore, and a prompting of the Spirit that asked us to be present. Lori Tibbits had no idea where to turn and a need that broke the heart; her husband had Parkinson’s, sleep apnea, and is in constant pain. If he could just rest! His medical care staff suggested a foam egg crate mattress pad, but insurance would not cover it and their income is fixed. Is there anyone she could call for assistance? If she could just get a twin for his side of the bed they would make it work!
When Katrina brought me this request, we knew we had to act and ordered the mattress topper…King size. When Lori came to pick it up she said, “You don’t know how happy you have made me. My husband rarely smiles because he is stressed and is in pain all the time, but when you called saying you were buying a mattress topper for him, you made us so happy. I know this will make my husband smile. God always helps when you least expect it!”
These are the little things that have a big impact! The things people need that are often outside of a fixed income budget, and yet, are important to promoting overall well-being – sufficient sleep is the time the body and mind rest and recover. We were grateful to be able to provide and it’s because of the generosity of Kettle donors, Thrift Store donors and shoppers, and partner agencies throughout the city/county/state that entrust us…to listen and be a presence in times of need.
Little things can and do make BIG impact!
